University Center of Lake County Welcomes UIC as its 13th Member Institution

Advancing Healthcare Innovation: Introducing UIC's Undergraduate and Graduate programs in Health Information Management.

The University Center of Lake County is proud to welcome its thirteenth member institution to the family. We are pleased to announce that the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has joined the ranks of accredited universities in Lake County offering high quality academic programs to its residents.


At the fall 2024 meeting, the University Center Governing Board approved two cutting-edge UIC programs: the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BSHIM) and the Master of Science in Health Information Management (MSHIM). Beginning in fall 2025, these programs will be accessible online through the University Center, bringing UIC’s esteemed academic excellence directly to the local community.

The Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BSHIM) program is tailored for transfer students with an Associate of Arts/Science (AA/AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Health Information Technology, as well as individuals with expertise in cancer/tumor registry or medical coding and billing.

UIC's 100% online BSHIM completion program is designed to prepare graduates for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam. The 63-credit hour program, housed within UIC's College of Applied Health Sciences, can be completed in 24 months. The curriculum provides skilled instruction in the management and use of information and information systems for healthcare planning and provision, resource allocation, and executive decision-making. Students will explore essential topics such as coding, systems analysis, data quality management, and health information research.

The Master of Science in Health Information Management (MSHIM) program equips students with advanced skills and knowledge critical for shaping effective health information management strategies, improving patient care quality, and safeguarding electronic health records. Graduates will also gain the qualifications necessary to sit for the prestigious Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification exam.

UIC's online MSHIM program offers a comprehensive curriculum encompassing medical records management, patient data storage, coding, and leadership. The 39-credit hour program, also part of UIC's College of Applied Health Sciences, can be completed in 20 months. Students will learn to manage healthcare data and information resources, examine the social, ethical, organizational, and legal issues associated with health information systems and electronic health records, and acquire the expertise necessary to take and pass the RHIA certification exam.

Both programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), ensuring they meet the quality standards of health information management education.
