Northeastern Illinois University Launches Master’s Degree in Special Education LBS II at the University Center of Lake County

Grayslake, IL — The Department of Literacy, Leadership, Development & Special Education at Northeastern Illinois University is pleased to announce the launch of its Master of Science Degree program in Special Education with a focus on Learning Behavior Specialist II (LBS II) at the University Center of Lake County in Fall 2025. This program is designed to offer current special education teachers with advanced preparation in academic and behavioral areas through a tailored educational program from an accredited institution. This comprehensive Master’s degree program with two Illinois state endorsements (MS-LBS II). Graduates who successfully complete the program will obtain endorsements in Curriculum Adaptation Specialist (CAS) and Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS).



As the demand for highly qualified special education professionals continues to grow, this program will provide an in-depth understanding of best practices, assessment strategies, and intervention techniques tailored to meet the needs of students with disabilities,” said, Dr. Jolanta Jonak, Associate Professor of Special Education and program coordinator. “The LBS II endorsement will enable graduates to work in various educational settings, advocating for inclusive practices and enhancing student learning outcomes.”


Key Highlights of the Program

  • Comprehensive Curriculum: The program offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, covering behavior management, individualized education planning, and instructional strategies

  • Flexible Learning Options: Designed for working professionals, the program will be offered in a hybrid format, allowing students to balance their studies with primarily online classes that are complemented with several in-person meetings at the UCLC campus in Grayslake, IL.

  • Expert Faculty: Students will learn from experienced educators and practitioners who are leaders in the field of special education.
