General Information

The University Center in Grayslake is open:

while classes are in session.
Evening and weekend hours are limited when classes are not meeting. 

For Spring of 2013, the University Center at Waukegan is open:

It is closed Friday through Sunday.

For the 2012-2013 academic year, both University Center facilities will be closed:

All visitors are invited to enter and exit through the main (north) door. Parking is located at the north and east sides of the building. Parking is free and does not require a pass or window sticker.  A bike rack is located on the north side of the building on the parkway between the main parking lot and the driveway that passes in front of the building.

Michael’s on Main at the University Center Cafe is located on the first level atrium area. Summer 2013 Hours of operation are:

Monday thru Thursday 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm (No lunch service duing the summer.)
Saturday 7:30 am to 12:30 pm
Closed Friday and Sunday

The menu is available in the cafe and the reception area. Students interested in arranging for a class meal are asked to work with the cafe staff.  Pizza delivery directly to a University Center Grayslake classroom is now available. 

Vending machines for cold beverages are located on all three levels near the mid-section of the building. Snacks are also available in the vending machine on the second floor.

Food and beverages purchased within the University Center are allowed in the classrooms, but no food or drink is allowed in the computer labs; Covered beverages and tidy snacks are allowed in the library. Students and visitors should dispose of trash properly in the classroom wastebaskets and the recycling stations located on each floor.

Copying and printing is available via a Quick Key system in the first floor student services area and the third floor library. Printed Quick Key instructions for faculty and students are available in the reception area and the library.

Smoking, alcohol and drugs are not permitted. Smoking is allowed outside the building near smoking receptacles. Please do not prop doors open to facilitate outside smoking. 

The University Center handles emergency and weather closings in two complementary ways.

The University Center has a direct notification system in place to alert University Center students and faculty when there is an emergency or weather closing.  Students and faculty may register to receive text messages or email or voicemail announcing any emergency that affects the University Center facilities in Grayslake or Waukegan. To register, please click on the Current Students item in the menu on the left and then select Emergency Notification System. 

We urge you to register for this service and to update your personal profile as your phone number or email address changes.  Messages sent via this system will also appear on the University Center’s homepage.  This service will not be used for any marketing or non-emergency announcements.

To notify the Chicago area media, the Center also works with the Emergency Closing Center. Closing notification will be made via their website and:

- ABC-TV Channel 7
- WGN-TV Channel 9
- WFLD-TV Channel 32
- CLTV Channel 39

Please look for announcements about the University Center of Lake County not the College of Lake County. Although we will undoubtedly coordinate with CLC, each institution will be making its own closing decisions.

House phones are located in each classroom and in the hallways in each wing on each floor. In a medical emergency, you may dial 911 from any house phone. Please also alert the receptionist by dialing 4008. If it is a police emergency, dial 5555.  There is an automated electronic defibrillator located on the second floor near the main atrium. 

University Center has long helped students see the world around them in new ways through its educational programs.  It also provides a more direct opportunity for seeing Lake County in a new way through its art collection.

University Center is the beneficiary of the State’s Art in Architecture program, created in 1977 through Public Act 80-241 “to promote and preserve the arts of Illinois by securing artwork of all media for public buildings constructed with State funds.”  Administered through the Capital Development Board (CDB), the Art in Architecture program spends one-half of 1% of the construction appropriation for each building to supply art created by Illinois artists for display there. 

Through the Art in Architecture program, the University Center of Lake County was able to commission two Illinois artists to provide public art for the University Center’s Grayslake facility.  Photographer Michael Brown created the art that hangs within the building.  In addition, bronze bas relief sculptures by David Seagraves are on display in the University Center’s courtyard.

Both Brown and Seagraves depict the natural environment of Lake County as it undergoes change.  Brown’s work portrays the seasonal changes within Lake County’s landscape.  Seagraves uses a series of pieces to chart the impact of industrialization and technology on the natural world and on human society.
